Superficial is Real
Yes, it is. It's as real as the eyes reading this post and the fingers typing it. We live in a world where people deny the existence of the superficial. Perhaps they are in denial because they are superficial themselves?
The more time you spend with the "Real" the easier it is to recognize the "Fake". A fake R100 note can circulate in the economy for months, maybe even years, but it will only be spotted by a bank or grocery store teller. Why? Tellers work with money everyday- they know how it looks, how it feels, even how it smells more than any common consumer does. Yes, we use money to buy goods but it's a swift transaction and we don't use our conscious mind to pay attention to this casual transaction. Our senses aren't heightened at the exchange of a couple of green (or in South Africa, green, brown, pink or purple) notes because our aim is to purchase something not to make the transaction. I'm not a Psychologist, but I do know enough to make this statement.
Likewise, having real conversations with real people who have real dreams and real beliefs allows one to easily recognize the superficial. If you interact with real people on a daily basis, you pay close attention to their behavior, values and general character. Then, when you come into contact with superficial people you are easily alerted.
I believe that superficial people are worldly people and real people are people in the world with an eternal focus. If you believe that this world is your home and you're living for the pleasures your eyes see, then, your life is superficial. There's more to life than meets the eye and blindness is a curse to this world. Eternal perspective, on the other hand, is open to what is beyond this world- greater and more valuable. Its not an unattainable perspective, it's just a challenging point of view.
Superficiality is a reality in this world. It is fake, deceiving and deadly.
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever." 1 John 2:15-17 (NIV)
